Puppy School – Why Is It So Important?
September 20, 2023
Puppy schools offer you and your pup a fun experience with lots of important learning in a group setting, while also helping your pup grow into a sociable, confident and well behaved dog. At the same time it will also provide you with guidance to help your pup become a happy and well adjusted adult.
Once you have brought your new puppy home and you have all had some time to bond, it’s time to start looking at training sessions. The critical period for socialisation is between 3 and 17 weeks of age and the experiences that your pup has during this time will influence and shape their behaviour into adulthood.
Courses will vary, but the basic principle is regular sessions for a period of time, usually around 5 weeks where you and your puppy can learn the basic skills, such as “sit”, “drop”, “come”etc. and will also allow your pup time to socialise with other puppies in a controlled setting as opposed to a dog park or a store where there can be negative interactions or distractions.
Group classes are also more cost effective, rather than paying for one on one training down the track when your pup grows up. Research shows that a good puppy school can prevent problem behaviours later in life.
It’s important to enrol in a reputable puppy school, so always check the credentials of the trainer and ensure that the location is suitable for training without distractions
You can find a good puppy school by speaking to your local vet or contacting Jim’s Pet Patrol on 131546
